About the Telescope Open Houses...
The UMBC Telescope
(on top of the Physics Building) is open
for public viewing on the first Thursday of every month. If the weather is cloudy or rainy or snowy, there will be a rain date the
following Thursday.
If the weather cooperates, you can look through the telescope at a selection of celestial objects chosen by members of JCA who will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. The targets typically include planets, globular clusters, and nebulae. Further Open House Information...
By Special Arrangement...With advance notice, we are also willing to consider providing a tour of the telescope during the day to school, youth, and other groups visiting UMBC. Such visits can only take place if suitable JCA personnel are available, and if other activities within the department do not prevent access to the dome. Interested group-leaders should contact both the Telescope Coordinator and the Director of the JCA at least 6 weeks prior to their intended visit.
