JCA: Instructional/Research telescope: Tour 02

What else does a telescope have to do?

Bring the light to a sharp focus (Resolve)

Need to separate the light from different sources (stars, galaxies, etc) on the sky.
We don't want the light all mixed up together.

    Track the stars

Need to compensate for the earth's rotation.
Typically, an object will need to be observed for more than a minute.
It will drift through the field of view in a few minutes if not `tracked'.

    Carry instruments

Astronomers are scientists!
Need to quantify observations.
Instruments include:

  • Cameras (CCD)
  • Spectrographs
  • Photometers

The instruments can be quite heavy.
