The Joint Center for Astrophysics within the Physics Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in association with the Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics at Goddard Space Flight Center, is seeking qualified candidates for a Research Associate in X-ray Astronomy. Candidates must hold a Ph.D or equivalent in physics or astronomy. The position is supported entirely by external funds.

The position will involve the analysis of Chandra and XMM data of Seyfert Galaxies, and detailed modeling using photoionization codes in collaboration with Ian George. Experience in the analysis of X-ray grating data and/or modeling of photoionized plasmas would be an advantage. The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate on proposals for additional observations and funding.

The position will be based at UMBC, but the successful applicant can expect to make frequent trips to the nearby NASA/GSFC. The duration of the position is initially for 1 year, but may be extended contingent on performance and funding. The starting salary will be commensurate with experience, and competitive ($40,000 to $50,000 per annum). The University of Maryland provides an excellent benefits package.

The application deadline is 2001 March 01. Work will commence on 2001 April 01, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants should submit their CV, bibliography, and research interests, and arrange for three references to be forwarded to the Joint Center for Astrophysics, at the above address. Address email inquires to Ian George, george@jca.umbc.edu.

UMBC is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.

UMBC is located just outside the Baltimore beltway, 8 miles to the South West of the city center, within the Baltimore-Washington corridor. It is an easy 25 mile drive South to NASA/GSFC (maps/directions), and an additional 10 miles to the center of Washington DC. (More on the Baltimore area)
