Overview:
This course is the third part of the Introductory Physics program aimed at Physics Majors at UMBC, and the stepping-stone to almost all the upper-level Physics courses. In the first half of the course the simple harmonic oscillator is introduced. The mathematical formulism of free, damped and forced oscillators are discussed in a number of (mainly mechanical) settings, along with coupled oscillators, the normal modes of such a system and superposition. Transverse and longitudinal waves are then introduced, initially for mechanical systems (including sound) but then for electromagnetic waves. The final third of the course involves geometrical and physical optics, diffraction, interference and polarization. [See Full Syllabus.]
